An estimated 32,000 Dane County residents lack health insurance coverage including roughly 4,700 children. Without preventative care, these individuals access care at hospital emergency rooms or go untreated. When one child misses school because of a treatable illness, our whole community suffers. United Way and community partners are working to create innovative solutions aimed at tackling the underlying causes of this problem, not just putting a band-aid on the symptoms.

United Way of Dane County led the formation of a Health Council, which has united Dane County health care and government partners to create a healthier community. The focus of the Health Council's work is on increasing access to health care, dental care and medications for Dane County's low-income, uninsured residents.

Goals:

  • Increase access to "primary health care homes."
  • Implement a system-wide model that increases access to medications for the uninsured/those unable to pay for them.
  • Increase access to dental care.
